While many are finding each other on Meetup. It was such an amazing experience — many attendees were extremely grateful and prompted me to run the same type of program on a weekly basis. It was a dream! Timeline everyone trickles in, hangs up their coats, and fills out a name tag nervous energy fills the room, everyone is chatting and shaking hands coffee and tea 2: In regular speed dating the men sit on one side of the table and never move, while the women shift over one seat each time. But in that scenario, each person only matches with half of the attendees. I needed everyone to match with each other — regardless of gender! The way to get around this problem is to have one person sit in the same seat for the entire process, while everyone else shifts one seat over and ropes around the tables. Having an Odd Number of Attendees: You can prepare for an odd number in three ways:

Posted on October 7, by librariantiff One of the most powerful things I can do for my students is work to promote reading for fun and helping students find books that they will enjoy. I feel like middle school is one of those key times in life where many students either take the path to become a life-long reader…or not. I pulled books that I frequently recommend from 7 different genres and put them in boxes at each of my 7 tables. It exposes readers to new genres that they may not seek out on their own.
I set a timer like the one projected on the screen for five minutes. For the first 30 seconds, they can peruse the books in the box at their table and select a book. Then, they spend 4 minutes reading the book to see if it hooks them. With 30 seconds remaining, they make note of the title of the book and give it a ranking.
If at any time they find a book they want to check out, they can hold on to that book. All other books go back in the box, we rotate the boxes, and repeat this activity times. I always get great feedback from teachers and students with this activity…they love it! By the final round, about half of the students will typically have a book that they want to check out. I did this several weeks ago with my 8th graders, and this week the 6th graders are having their turn.

Colby Sharp My fourth graders are spending some time these last few weeks of school building their to-read lists. I have heard about book speed dating from multiple people on Twitter the last two years. When selecting books for book speed dating I try to find titles that: Are in a series that not many students know about New titles Books that I am surprised not many students have found during the year Favorite authors that my kids are not reading Blume, Dahl, Cleary, etc. Lots and lots of nonfiction Old favorites-books that kids loved at the start of the year Old read alouds-I love including the books that my students teachers read aloud to them in third grade 2.

Monday, December 9, Book Speed Dating: I’ve wanted to try it out for awhile now, and I finally went for it last week. I wanted to use a smaller “test” group before trying this with a class of 35 eighth graders, so I tried it with our resource reading classes first. These classes are designed for struggling readers and generally have fewer than ten students. Because of the nature of the class, the students do not tend to be readers, nor are they generally intrinsically-motivated to read.
I had the best results with the eighth grade class, who better understood all my dating jokes “sometimes you have to kiss some frogs”, “sometimes you have to throw that fish back in”, “if at first you don’t succeed”, etc. They really enjoyed this lesson, and my eighth grade library assistants, who saw the speed dating as they worked in the library, all asked me to do this with their classes, too. So here is what I did: Decide how you want the tables set up.
I had 9 tables with 4 chairs at each table.
