Happy Stumblings

July 16, 3: The New York-based duo are now fielding interest from both film and television producers looking to use their story as the basis for a movie or TV series. Walsh and Goodman were good friends who each struggled to find the right mate in Manhattan. Goodman was afraid of commitment, often juggling several women at once, while Walsh is self-described “hopeless romantic” who was always looking to find “the one. The couple agreed to see each other every day for 40 days and go on at least three dates a week. They also had to see a couples therapist once a week and take one weekend trip together. Not only did Goodman and Walsh document the entire relationship and fill out a daily questionnaire, but they promised not to date or have sex with anyone else.

40 Days of Dating: would you go out (and have sex) with an old friend?

Whatever opinion there may be about online dating, most can agree that traditional forms of courtship seem miles away. As the name suggests, it chronicled their experiences of each day they were dating. The entire idea sprung from their opposite relationship problems. Jessica is a hopeless romantic, while Tim is a commitment-phobe. Both seeking to find love — or at least sort out their issues — they decided to exclusively date for 40 days.

Did you see Timothy today? We went to our first couples therapy session together. I go to therapy on my own, and have always enjoyed it. Life passes by so quickly, and I like having an hour a week to reflect in an attempt to learn and grow from it all. Did anything interesting happen? She asked us straight away if Tim and I were attracted to each other. After some awkward glances, we both admitted that we do find each other attractive.

Tim immediately rattled out numerous reasons:

Warner Brothers has acquired the film rights to Jessica Walsh and Timothy Goodman’s blog, 40 Days of Dating.

How invested is too invested? Sure, it was a dream, but it somehow seems like perfect metaphor for Tim and Jessie. As women who were both on the NYC dating scene for a long time, we related to Jessie and often saw so much of ourselves in her that it was painful to read. We wanted to shake her and tell her that she would never find what she was looking for in that guy. And as for Tim? Been there, done that.

One more step

Jul 23, WB After every breakup, my best guy friend since college, Jason, has always been there for me. From making me his date to his company holiday party to taking me out to see a movie, he always knew how to help me bounce back—and he was a constant after a string of relationships through college and beyond. But, as much as I platonically love him, I would never consider dating him.

‘40 Days’ Online Stars Prepare for Hollywood Ending

It’s a struggle to get into the habit of dating, and even tougher to turn those dates into meaningful relationships. We’ve read about many ways to deal with this problem, and have friends and family who fit into every category: The pair had been friends for years and, on discovering they were single at the same time, decided to date each other for 40 days purely as an experiment.

There was a set of strict rules: Every evening they would separately complete a questionnaire to document their feelings. The 40 days came to an end on 28 April, but it was only in July that they started publishing the answers on their blog, 40 Days of Dating — capturing the attention of readers worldwide.

Jessica Walsh, the designer/art director behind the wildly popular online project 40 Days of Dating and partner at Sagmeister&Walsh, has once again teamed up with fellow designer Timothy Goodman on an incredible, and unique, project that you shouldn’t miss.

Finally, they had to fill in a questionnaire at the end of every day and document their relationship. They both treated the whole thing fairly analytically at first, like a science experiment with cocktails and cutesy little notes they write to each other before their dates. But then, after about a week, it starts to get interesting — mainly because they start to actually fancy each other. She, in turn, freaks out even more. He gets a bit turned on because surprise, surprise, he likes crazy ladies, and spends a lot of time trying to not crack on to her.

At this point the blog has all the makings of a second-rate Jane Austen novel minus the social comedy. Admittedly about 80 per cent of the relationship peril could have been avoided if they stopped obsessing over every little thought and feeling they had, and then discussing it in therapy. So why was it so addictive? So compelling that the blog started to go viral — after the first couple of weeks – with up to , people a day were tuning in to see if they were finally going sleep do the deed.

And hallelujah, on day they Do It. Cue much cheering, whooping and fist pumping from their many followers. And once they get that out of their system, the experiment seems to go much more smoothly, which makes me wonder if all the aforementioned tension was a giant, mutual case of blue balls. Compelling as it is, some of the posts do grate a bit with me. And did I mention all the therapy speak?

When New York–based graphic designers and long-time friends Timothy Goodman and Jessica Walsh found themselves single at the same time, they decided to try an experiment. The old adage says that it takes 40 days to change a habit—could the same be.

What if someone created a step program for selfishness, a course of action for turning egocentrism on its head? You may remember Walsh and Goodman from their hugely popular 40 Days of Dating, during which the two friends dated for 40 days and chronicled the courtship online. Though the romance failed to blossom, the two remained friends and landed a book contract and movie option. They called the project “an experiment in reality storytelling.

If reality programming has proven anything, it is that audiences possess a goodly appetite for voyeuristic, self-effacing, and redemptive entertainment. Like 40 Days, 12 Kinds feeds that hunger by combining clever graphic design, audience participation, and more than a little exhibitionism, all in the name of narrative.

Blesk was designed by Ksenya Samarskaya , who asked me to create the sample text for display purposes. It turned out to be some of the most fun I’ve ever had writing copy. All the puns, oblique references, and weird private sayings in my head finally served a purpose! I couldn’t be happier with the way it turned out.

The website that would become the world-famous 40 Days of Dating was in dire need of copy editing, and I was happy to be of assistance. Each individual entry was submitted to me around 7 p.

Two single, graphic designers and long-time friends decided to try an experiment: They would date each other for 40 days, make visual and written records of their experiences and post it all online where it became an internet sensation.

Today, Timothy tells us the story of his first ever commission. John Fulbrook was the creative director at an imprint called Scribner. I met him a couple times during my senior year to get advice on my portfolio, and I was a big fan of his thinking and his contagious energy. Upon graduating, I was getting offers for a lot of money at branding agencies, but at the time I really felt like I needed a mentor—someone who would let me find my own voice.

In school, I looked up to designers like Paul Sahre and Rodrigo Corral because of their gorgeous book covers and editorial work, and I really got swept up in the novelty of it. I had to do both book jackets at the same time. These were the first two covers I had ever designed in my life.
